Of course Bernie Sanders is better than most “progressives” on economic related issues. But here’s the thing: He’s in the U.S. Senate right now. What has Sanders been up to regarding #BlackLIvesMatter issues? Obviously many white progressives believe Black voters are supposed to support someone without even knowing what their policy views are on issues impacting Black communities.
Has he been speaking out loud about Rep. John Conyers’ racial profiling bill that has been sponsored by Sen. ben Cardin for years in the Senate? Is he a sponsor on the Cory Booker/Rand Paul bill on expungement — the REDEEM Act? Has he joined as a co-sponsor on Sen. Tim Scott’s bill to fund police body cameras? Has Sanders offered any legislation himself on these issues? When someone has to reach back four decades to prove they are against segregation (we should hope so…) when they are sitting in the U.S. Senate now and could be referring to current work, that’s sort of a red flag.
For those of you “progressives” who keep saying division within the Democratic party will benefit Republicans I have a question: What difference does it make for African American voters? It’s not as if poverty has improved in Virginia or in America since Democrats took VA’s governorship or the White House in 2009. It’s not as if things are perfect now since Democrats win the top five offices in Virginia in 2013.
When it comes to voting and voting and voting again, it would appear that nothing much changes regarding the most important items on the Black agenda whether the winners are Democrats or Republicans.
