Want to Celebrate Voting Rights? Fix Waiting for 4 Hours to Vote @GovernorVA

In the modern Age Why Are People Waiting Five Hours to Vote? When is the problem of (mostly) Black voters having to wait in line for hours on end going to actually be fixed? We see the commemorations marking the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act put on by various Democrats in Virginia. That’s nice.  But what would really fully celebrate the Voting Rights Act is making voting easier.  Now that all these Democrats are in charge in the Commonwealth one would think that long lines in Norfolk and Chesapeake and elsewhere would be fixed.

Part of a Virginian-Pilot editorial on November 8, 2012. Everyone pointing figures. Will it happen again?

The lines in 2012 weren’t just long in Norfolk. They were long in Chesapeake and other cities as well. Funny that these cities with the long voting lines are always the predominately Black ones. If anyone has photos of white voters in Virginia standing in line to vote in 2012 send them to BlackVotersVA@gmail.com.  Anyone trying to cast a vote at the Dr. Clarence Cuffee Community Center last presidential election likely had to wait in line for a long time.

For anyone thinking the lines had to do with the “Obama turnout” then that assumes there should be less people in 2016 and there should be NO problems in 2016.  But really, there should have ben NONE in 2012 when everyone knew there was likely to be big turnout with Obama’s name on the ballot. The excuses from Virginia’s registrars are never ending –from not enough staff to not enough voting machines. We’ve heard them all.  What we know is everyone knows when election day is — and Attorney General Mark Herring and his boss the Governor really need to focus on this problem that no one appears to be able to fix.
